He Is Risen Alleluia
Tomorrow and the days following are special days in the life
of the Christian. Tomorrow, Thursday is
commonly referred to as Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday. It is called Maundy perhaps
with reference to Jesus’ washing his disciples feet, or perhaps even going back
to a time when in preparation for Easter Maundy money was given to the
poor. In any event the day before Good
Friday has long been kept holy in one form or another. For example Hot Cross buns, buns marked with
a cross in the middle were made and widely sold at a time when they were a mere
one a penny, and even two a penny. The Following day, Friday, is something of a
misnomer, at least on the face of it. It
was one of the darkest, meanest, days in known history, both literally and
spiritually. It was the day when an
innocent man, and not only a man, the Lord and Savior Himself was pierced,
reviled and hanged for preaching good and doing good. So that the dark and heinous acts notwithstanding,
it comes down to us by the name Good. Not black, not bleak not dismal, but
Good. The following day is of course Easter Saturday or the day before Easter –
Then comes Easter Sunday, when Christians Sing Alleluia, Alleluia,- He is Risen
When we can join together and recite
with the Apostle Paul, “O death where is
thy sting? O grave why is thy victory?. The sting of
death is sin; but the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
