David
Executed the murderers of Ishbosheth, Saul’s Son.
When
Ishbosheth, Saul’s son heard that Abner was dead, his hands shook, and all
Israel were troubled. At the time Ishbosheth had two men who were captains of
the bands, the name of one man was Baarnah and the name of the other was Rechab
who was the sons of Rimmon a Beerothite of Benjamin. And the Beerothites fled
to Gittaim and remained there. Now Jonathon also had a five year old son. And when the news of the death of Saul and of
Jonathon reached his nurse, she took him and tried to run away; but in doing
so, she fell and the boy whose name was Mephibosheth became lame. And the sons
of Rimmon came to the house of Ishbosheth in the heat of the day and found him
in bed and they smote him under his fifth rib so that he died. And they
beheaded him and escaped and kept going for the rest of the day and all night
until the following morning. And they took the head of Ishbosheth to David, in
Hebron and said to him, “Behold the head of Ishbosheth the son of Saul thine
enemy which sought thy life. And the Lord has avenged my Lord this day of Saul
and his seed.” And David replied and said, “As the Lord liveth who hath redeemed
my soul out of all my adversity, when I was told that Saul was dead, thinking
to having brought me good tidings, I took hold of him and slew him in Ziklag,
the very one who thought I would have given him a prize for bringing me good
tidings. How much more when wicked persons have slain a righteous man when
lying on his bed? Shall I not much more
require his blood from your hands and take you away from the earth?” And David
commanded his young men and they slew them and cut off their hands and their
feet, and hanged them over the pool in Hebron; but the head of Ishbosheth they
buried in the sepulcher of Abner in Hebron.
