Saul and the Witch of Endor
Saul and the Witch of Endor
Having
been told about the witch of Endor, Saul disguised himself by putting on none
kingly apparel and went by night to the witch, and asked her to use her powers
of witchcraft to bring up the person whom he would name to her. And the woman
not knowing to whom she spoke, but out of abundant caution, replied and said to
him that surely he knew what king Saul had done, how he cut off from the land
all who practised witchcraft and wizardry, therefore she asked the man before
him, “Are you trying to entrap me to cause me to lose my life?” And Saul swore unto her by the Lord and said,
”I swear to you that no harm shall come of you because of what you are about to
do. ”S thus assured, the witch asked Saul whom was his desire to see. And Saul
said bring me up Samuel. And when the
woman saw Samuel she screamed and asked Saul why he had deceived her; for she
knew by seeing Samuel, that the man before her was none other than Saul
himself. And Saul told her not to be afraid, but to tell him what she saw. And she told him that she saw gods ascending
out of the earth. And Saul asked her what form was he of, and she said an old
man coming up and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul knew that it was
Samuel. And he stooped with his face to the ground and bowed himself.
