Truce
between David’s men and Abner’s men.
So
Abner slew Asahel and continued on; but he was pursued by Asahel’s brothers
Joab and Abishai, and they continued following him until the sun went down, at
which time they were on a hill which was situated by the way of Gibeon in the
wilderness. And there they met up with the children of Benjamin who joined the
company in pursuit of Abner, and they formed one troop and stood on top of a
hill. Seeing them, Abner called to Joab
and asked him if it was necessary for the sword to devour forever, since in the
end it would only bring bitterness; and asked Joab how long before he would
tell the people to stop pursuing after him. And Joab responded and told him
that it was good he had spoken otherwise by morning the people would have
overtaken him. So Joab blew a trumpet
and the people stood still and followed after Abner no more. And the fighting
between the two factions ceased. And
Abner and his men walked all night through the plain, and over the Jordon, and
went through Bithron; and they came to Mahanaim. And Joab turned back from
following Abner and he gathered the men with him and counted them; and it was
found that 19 of David’s men were missing, plus Asahel. But David’s men had
killed of Benjamin and of Abner’s men 360. And they took up Asahel and buried him in the
sepulcher of his father which was in Bethlehem; and Joab and his men went all night
and they arrived at Hebron at the break of day.
