David
spared Saul a second Time.
In
spite of the vow between Saul and David, Saul continued his bitter enmity against
David and still intended to kill him should the opportunity arose. And so when
the Ziphites went and told Saul that David was hiding in the hills of Hachilah,
Saul rose and went in pursuit of David in the wilderness of Ziph, taking with
him three thousand hand-picked men to find David. And while Saul pitched his
tent in Jeshimon, David remained in the wilderness and he saw Saul’s soldiers
searching for him, and to make sure, David sent out spies which reported back
to him that Saul was indeed with his men And David went and camped near the very place
where Saul had pitched his tent and from there he could see the spot where Saul
was lying. And there were with him Abner the captain of his host, and the
soldiers all around him. And David enquired of his men who would go down into
Saul’s camp with him; and Abishai volunteered to go. And so David and Abishai
went among the people in the camp by night, and found the King lying in his
tent, his spear stuck in the ground by his pillow; and Abner and the soldiers
lying near all around him. Then Abishai told David that the Lord had again
delivered Saul unto his hand and volunteered to smite Saud, saying he would
only need to strike him once with his very spear. But David told Abishai, “Destroy
him not; for who can stretch forth his hand against the Lord’s anointed and be
guiltless?” And then David added, “As
the Lord liveth, the Lord shall strike him. His day shall come to die, or he
will fall in battle and perish. The Lord forbid that I should stretch forth my
hand against the Lord’s anointed; but take his spear and his water and let us
go” So they took the spear and the water and escaped. And no one saw Saul or Abishai
nor, heard anything, because the Lord had caused Saul and all his men to fall
into a deed sleep. Indeed how Great is the Lord!
