Samuel,
Saul and the Witch of Endor
It
is evident from the previous discourses, that Samuel was already dead and
buried when Saul approached the witch, while in disguise, and asked her to
raise Samuel. Firstly, the woman did not
know who the stranger was. From the discourse, she initially thought it was
perhaps one of Saul’s servants trying to entrap her so that she could be
killed. Because it was common knowledge
that Saul had killed all known witches and the like. So after the stranger assured her that no
harm would come to her, she was prepared to do her magic; but she was totally
unprepared for what she saw. She knew
that she had no powers to raise any one already in the grave; but like those
who practiced her trade, she was prepared to do her hocus pocus and somehow
satisfy the client and collect her fees. But to her consternation the dead
Samul did rise up, and she was able to describe him to the man, whom she then
realized was none other than the king, Saul himself, that sat before her. The question,
is therefore, how or why did Samuel appear? Well we know that God can use any
situation, any human or none human instrumentality to effect His purpose. While
the witch had no intention or power to raise Samuel, God used her to raise
Samuel because He had a message for Saul, just as when he used Balaam’s donkey
to deliver His message to Balaam. Saul went to see a witch, God used the witch
and the occasion to speak to his errant child and to tell him what thus says
the Lord even by the mouth of one of his dead prophets. For nothing is impossible with God. Of course
we cannot ignore Samuel’s question to Saul, “Why has thou disquieted me?” Yes
it was Saul’s action in going to the witch that resulted in Samuel being
disturbed and we note also the question, “Why have you disquieted, disturbed,
me from my rest?” He might well have
asked Saul why he disturbed his sleep, or why he woke him up. So we know now if
we did not know before that those who departed this world in the faith and fear
of the Lord were at rest until He who would be the first risen from the dead,
Christ himself.www.chaberbooks.com
