David
laments over the death of Abner
So
then, Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner because he had slain their
brother Asahel in battle at Gibeon. And
David commanded Joab and all the people that were with him to rend their
clothes and gird themselves with sackcloth and mourn for Abner, as the King
himself followed the bier. And David lifted up his voice and wept at the grave
of Abner and all the people wept. And the king lamented over Abner and asked, “Did
Abner die the death of a fool? Your hands were not bound, neither were your
feet put in fetters. As a man falls
before the wicked, so have you fallen!” And on hearing David’s words the people wept
more bitterly. And at evening, the people urged David to eat before the sun
went down; but David swore he would not eat before the sun went down. And all
the people took note of David’s behaviour over the death of Abner, and it
pleased the people, as everything that David did pleased them. And the people
understood that it was not David’s wish that Abner be killed. And the King told
his servants that a prince and a great men had fallen in Israel that day. And David
declared, “I am this day weak though I am anointed king, I find these men of
Zeruiah too hard for me. The Lord shall reward the doer od evil according to
his wickedness.”
