David Smote the Amalekites and retook
the Booty.
And the Egyptian having been revived by
David and his men, told David that when he was with his master’s company, they
had made an invasion upon the south of the Cherethites and upon the coast of
Judah and the south of Caleb, and burnt Ziklag with fire. And David asked him if perhaps he could lead them
to the company. And the man asked David to swear by his God that he would
neither kill him, nor deliver him up to his master, and he would lead them to
where to where the company went. David agreed and when they caught up with the
company they were much scattered and eating and drinking and dancing and making
merry, because of all the plunder they had taken out of the land of the Philistines
and out of Judah. And David smote them from the twilight even unto the evening
of the next day; and there escaped only 400 young men who rode upon camels and
fled. And David recaptured all that the Amalekites had taken away, including
his two wives and every other person small and great, and everything else that
had been taken. And David returned with all the people and all the merchandise
that he had taken and return to the brook where he had left the two hundred
men, who were very glad to see him return and he greeted them. And when David
offered to share the spoils with the two hundred who had stayed behind, some of
the greedier and meaner kinds of his men objected that they who did not taste
the battle should share in the spoils.
But David told them not so; for as the Lord delivered up the enemy into
their hands, all the men regardless, should share in the spoils of war. And so
David gave those men a portion.
