a State of War
a State of War
Now
after the death of Asahel, a state of war existed between the house of David
and the house of the son of Saul. But as
the Saul faction led by Abner the captain of the army of Saul’s son, as he was
in the days of Saul, grew weaker, those that followed David grew stronger and
stronger. And in the meantime, David had six sons, the first of whom was Amnon,
born in Hebron to his wife Ahinoam, a Jezreelitess; and his second son was
Chileab by Abigail the wife of the deceased Nabal the Carmelite, and the third
son was Absalom, whose mother was Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;
and his fourth son was Adonijah the son of Haggith, and the fifth son Spephatiah
the son of Abital; and the sixth son Ithream by Eglah, David’s wife, all born to him at Hebron. In the meantime, Abner had become the
strongman on the side of Saul’s son against the house of David. But there would
soon be trouble between Abner and Saul’s son Ishbosheth over a woman who had
been Saul’s concubine.
