BRAGADAYJAH
910
David
appointed King of Judah.
Having
set aside time to mourn the death of Saul and his beloved friend Jonathon, and
having elegized and eulogized them respectively, David turned to the Lord to
seek directions. He asked the Lord whether he should go up into the cities of
Judah and which city if any; and the Lord told him to go unto the city of
Hebron. So David and his two wives and also the family of his men that were with
him went to Hebron. And the men of Judah came unto David and anointed him king
over the house of Judah; and they told David that it were the men of Jabesh-Gilead
that had buried Saul. And David sent
messengers to the men of Jabesh-Gilead greeting them in the name of the Lord,
and thanking them for their thoughtfulness and kindness towards the king of
Israel by rescuing his body from the Philistines and giving him a burial. But
Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul
and brought him over to Mahanaim, and made him king over Gilead, and over the
Ashurites, and over the Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin and over
all Israel. Ishbosheth was at the time 40 years old when he was made king and
he rules over Israel for two years; but the house of Judah followed David; and
David ruled in Hebron over the house of Judah seven and a half years.
