Saul seeks a woman with a familiar spirit.
And
while David dwelt with Achish in Gath, the Philistine army began to gather
together to fight against Israel. And Achish told David that he would be
expected to go out with him to battle. And David replied and told him that he
surely know what he was capable of, whereupon Achish replied and told him that
he shall be the keeper of head forever. Of course by that time Samuel was
already dead and buried, and Saul had killed or banished from the land, all those
who had a familiar spirits and wizardry, that is to say all who engaged in
witchcraft of any kind, including fortune tellers and seers. And the Philistines gathered themselves together
and encamped at Shunem; and Saul’s army encamped themselves at Gilboa. But when Saul saw the hosts of the
Philistines, he was afraid and his heart quaked within him, and, he was greatly
troubled. And when Saul enquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer him by
means of dreams or at all. So Saul told
his servants to seek out a woman that possessed a familiar spirit; that he may
go to her and enquire of the Lord through her.
And his servants told him that there was a woman in a place called
Endor, who had a familiar spirit.
