BRAGADAYJAH 909

BRAGADAYJAH 909
David Eulogized Saul and Jonathon.

Of a truth, David was a man of God’s own heart, at least from the point of view of being of long-suffering and forgiveness. Most men would have been if not exactly ecstatic at the news of Saul’s death, would in any event shed no tears over him.  On the contrary David slayed the man who dared say he laid his hand against Saul, be it true or false. So David lamented Saul’s death and even wrote an elegy on the death of the King and of his son Jonathon, David’s beloved and trusted friend.  His words speak for themselves.  “Also he bade them teach the children the use of the bow; behold it is written in the book of Jasher. The beauty of Israel is slain upon the high places. How are the mighty fallen! Tell it not in Gath. Publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice; lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.  Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain upon you, nor fields of offerings; for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away. The shield of Saul as though he had not been anointed with oil. From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathon turn not back; and the sword of Saul return not empty. Saul and Jonathon were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided. They were swifter than eagles; they were stronger than lions. Ye daughters of Israel weep over Saul who clothed you in scarlet and with other delights; who put an ornament of gold upon your apparel.”  And in a special eulogy to Jonathan David wrote   “How is the mighty fallen in the midst of battle, O Jonathon, thou was slain in thy high places. I am distressed for thee my brother Jonathon.  Very pleasant hast thou been unto me thy love to me was wonderful passing the love of women.”
