BRAGADAYJAH 951
Now when David came to the top of the mountain, he worshiped God. And at that
time Hushai the Archite came to David with his coat torn and dirt upon his head;
and David told him that if he passed on with him he would be a burden to him.
But if he returned to the city and pledged loyalty to Absalom he would be more
valuable to him, and defeat the counsel of Ahithophel. Besides David reminded
him that also there in the court of Absalom were Ahimaaz Zadok’s son, and
Jonathon, Abiathar’s son; and he could use them to get to him any useful pieces
of information that he may hear from time to time. So Hushai, David’s friend, went
into the city of Jerusalem to which city Absalom came eventually. And when
David was just passed the top of the hill, Ahithophel’s servant Ziba met him
with two saddled asses, and on them two hundred loaves of bread, and a hundred
bunches of raisins, a hundred summer fruit, and a bottle of wine. And David
asked Ziba what was the reason for the supplies? And he told him that the asses
were for the king’s household to ride on, and the bread and summer fruit for
the young men to eat, and the wine for such as became faint in the wilderness.
