BRAGADAYJAH 949
Absalom’s Revolt
Then Absalom sent spies throughout all the land of Israel, telling
them to warn the people that as soon as they heard the sound of the trumpet,
they should say that Absalom reign in Hebron. And with him were two hundred men
of Jerusalem who went along with Absalom not knowing what his intention was.
And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counsellor from Giloh
while he was offering sacrifices. And
the conspiracy against David grew daily as the people following Absalom
increased in number. And a messenger came to David advising him that the hearts
of the people were toward Absalom and David said to his people to make haste
and depart from Jerusalem lest Absalom overtake tem there and evil befell them
all. And David’s servants told to him that they were ready to do whatever he
commanded them to do. And so David departed taking his household with him,
leaving behind only ten of his concubines to keep the house. And David went and
dwelt in at far off place. Also with the king were the Cherethites, and the
Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men in all. Then the king asked Ittai the Gittite why he
was accompanying him and suggested to him that they return to their own place rather
than remain with him seeing they were strangers. So the king urged him to go
away and take his companions with him rather than running and hiding with him.
But Ittai answered and said, “As the Lord liveth and as my lord the king
liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be whether in death or in
life even so also shall thy servant be.”
