Jonathon
covenanted with David in the Wilderness
David
was made aware of what Saul was up to; so he told Abiathar the priest to bring
to him the ephod he had with him when he escaped the slaughter of his family;
and Abiathar gave it to him and David said, “O Lord God of Israel, thy servant
has certainly heard that Saul plans to come to Keilah to destroy the city for
my sake. Will the men of Keilah deliver me up to his hand? O Lord God of
Israel, I beseech thee tell thy servant.” And the Lord told David that Saul
would come down. Then David asked the
Lord if the men of Keilah would deliver him and his men up to Saul, and the
Lord told him they would. So David and
his men which were about six hundred, rose and departed out of Keilah and were on
the run, finding refuge and shelter wherever they could. And it was told Saul that David and his men
had escaped from Keilah, and so he did not go down. And David dwelt in caves in
the mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul continued to hunt for him daily; but
the Lord would not allow him to find him. Eventually Jonathon, Saul’s son went
and found David in the wilderness and gave him encouragement. He told David,
not to fear, for the hand of Saul his father would not find him. He also told
David that Saul knew that eventually he would be king over Israel, and that he
Jonathan would be next to him, hence the reason why his father wanted to kill
him. And the two of them, Jonathon and David, made a covenant before the
Lord. And David remained in the wood,
and Jonathon returned to his house.
