Goliath
the Giant
One
may easily imagine why the Philistines would place victory or defeat on the
shoulders of one man, Goliath. By any
standard of measurement he was a giant, a colossus. There would have been few
men on either side capable of carrying his armament alone, much less stand
before him in battle. Hence is arrogant challenge to Israel. Indeed he said, “I defy the armies of Israel
this day. Give me a man that we may fight together. And when Saul and the men of Israel saw this
great monster of a man, and heard his words, they quaked with fear. In the
meantime David had left Saul’s side to look after his flock, while his three eldest
brothers followed Saul to battle. In the meantime, Goliath drew nearer and
nearer each day to the Israelites and repeated his challenge over a period of
forty days while the Philistines and the Israelites were engaged in battle; but
no one man dared take up Goliath’s challenge.
