Saul’s
relentless pursuit of David
Learning
that David had fled from Ramah to Naioth, he sent his messengers to take David;
but when they saw the large number of prophets prophesying and Samuel standing
in the midst of them and over them, the spirit of God came upon the messengers
of Saul, and they too prophesied. And when reports reached Saul, he sent other
messengers; but they prophesied likewise. And when Saul heard of it, he sent a
third set of messengers and they too prophesied also. Then Saul himself went to
Ramah and came to a great well. And
stopping there he asked about Samuel and David; and he was told that they are
at Naioth in Ramah. Saul then set out for Naioth in Ramah and the spirit of the
Lord came upon him also and he began to prophesy. And he stripped off his
clothes and prophesied before Samuel naked all that day and night to the point
that many asked, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” And while Saul was thus
under the influence and power of the spirit of God, David escaped and went and reasoned
with Jonathon his friend, Saul’s son, trying to find a reason why Saul was
after his life.
