Predictably,
and as David well knew and told Jonathon his friend, Saul would go into a mad
rage when he found out that David was not coming to his table so he could take
one more and perhaps a final stab at him.
Perhaps he had instructed his cook to prepare a special portion of meat
or wine for David. In any event David
was not there, and he was not coming. So Saul aimed his invective at his son
Jonathon, even to calling him what in modern parlance as a son of a …. you know
what. Here’s what he said to Jonathon. “Thou
son of the perverse, rebellious women, do not I know that thou hast chosen the
son of Jesse to thy own confusion, and to the confusion of thy mother’s
nakedness? For as long as the son of
Jesse lives upon the earth thou shall not be established nor thy kingdom? Therefore go and fetch him to me so that he
shall surely die.” Having heard his
father’s words, Jonathon asked his father, why should David be slain and for what
cause, and what has he done? And Saul cast a javelin at Jonathon intending to
kill him and it missed; but Jonathon was left in no doubt that his father’s
intention was to kill David. So Jonathon rose from the table in fierce anger
and did not eat; for he was grieved for David because his father had done him
shame.
