Saul
then ordered his footmen to slay all the priests of the Lord, because they were
with David, and because they knew when he fled and they did not inform him. But
Saul’s servants would not put forth their hands to slay the priests of the
Lord. So he ordered Doeg, the head of his servants, to fall upon the priests
and slay them; and Doeg fell upon them and slayed them one by one, some 85 of
them that day, every one that wore a linen ephod. Then he turned to Nob, the
city of the priests and there he smote men, women and children, even those who
were sucklings, and oxen and asses and sheep with the edge of the sword. And
one of the sons of Abimelech, the son of Ahitub whose name was Abiathar,
escaped and fled after David, and he told David that Saul had slaughtered all
the priests of the Lord. And David said, “I knew it that day when Doeg the
Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I am responsible for all the deaths in your
father’s house. Abide with me; fear not; for he that seeks my life seeks also
your life also; but if you remain with me you will be safe. There is little
doubt that David, the man who killed Philistines by the thousands, could have
killed Doeg that day if he wanted to, knowing that he was Saul’s top servant,
and would report what he had seen to Saul. Yet David continued to exercise this
unbelievable restraint, the kind of restraint that is absolutely incomprehensible
in human terms.
