David’s
final words to Goliath
“Moreover,”
said David to Goliath, “when I slay you, not only will all the earth know that
there is a God in Israel; but they shall also know that the Lord saves not with
sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s and He will deliver you into our
hands.” At these words Goliath started, no doubt in a rage, to advance towards
David who himself ran toward him; and putting his hand in his bag, David took
out a stone and slung it at Goliath and smote him and he fell own dead. But
David had no sword; so he ran and stood upon Goliath and took Goliath’s own
sword and cut off his head; and when the Philistines saw that their champion
was dead, they fled. And the men of Israel and of Judah arose and shouted, and
pursued the Philistines through the valley even to the gates of Ekron, with
many dead and wounded falling by the way, into the Philistine strongholds of
Shaaraim, Gath and Ekron. And having ransacked and spoiled the tents of the
Philistines along the way, they returned to their own tents. And David took the
head of Goliath and brought it in Jerusalem; but he put his armor in the tents.
And when David presented the head of the enemy of Israel to Saul, he asked him,
“Whose son are you young man?” And David
answered him, “My father’s name is Jesse the Bethlehemite.
