Saul
tried to kill David
The
songs and words of the women troubled Saul greatly; for they sang, “Saul has
killed his thousands but David his ten thousands.” “Therefore,” fumed Saul, “There is nothing
left for him to have but the kingdom itself.” And Saul kept an evil eye on David from that
day onward. And it came to pass that the very next day an evil spirit from God
came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house while David played
on the harp as was his custom. And while
David was thus engaged, Saul twice threw his javelin at David in an attempt to
kill him, and it missed on both occasions. And Saul became even more afraid of
David, because he saw that the spirit of the Lord was departed from him and was
with David. So then Saul removed David from being captain over the whole army
and made him to lead only one thousand; but David continued to go in and out
before the people. But in the meantime, David continued to conduct himself
wisely in every way; for the Lord was with him. And when Saul saw that David
behaved himself with wisdom in all things, Saul became even more jealous and
afraid. But all Israel and all Judah loved David because he went out and came
in before them and conducted himself properly in all things.
