David
Feigned Madness
Having
received the showbread, David enquired of Abimelech whether he had to hand a
sword or spear or any weapon since he had not brought his sword or his weapon
with him, because the King’s business required haste. And the priest told him
that the sword of Goliath the Philistine whom he had slain in the valley of
Elah, was there wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod, and he was welcome to have
it since there was no other weapon available. So having taken the sword, David
still endeavoring to avoid Saul, fled to Achish the King of Gath. On arrival the
servants of Achish asked David if Saul was not still King of the land, and
whether he is not the same king about whom his people sang, “Saul has slain his
thousands and David his ten thousands.” And hearing these words, David feared
for his life at the hand of Achish. So he changed his behaviour in the presence
of Achish’s servants and behaved as one who was insane. He scratched at the
doors of the gate and drooled and let it run down his beard. And Achish asked his servants why they had
brought him a mad man, stating he would not allow a mad man to enter his house.
So David departed from there.
