A Holy God for a Holy People
– The Law of Motherhood.
And the Lord god commanded by
the mouth of Moses, that if a woman conceives and gives birth to a male child,
she shall be unclean for 7 days, in accordance with the separation of her
infirmity. And in the eight day, the flesh of his foreskin shall be
circumcised. And the mother shall then continue in her blood of purification
for thirty three days. During this time,
she shall be unclean and shall touch no holy thing neither shall she enter into
the tabernacle until the period of her purification has been completed. But if
she bears a female child, then she shall be unclean two weeks as in her
separation; and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying for sixty six
days.
And
when her days of purifying are fulfilled whether for a son or a daughter, she
shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon
or a turtledove for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the
congregation to the priest who shall offer it before the Lord and make an
atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for the woman bearing a male
or a female child.
But
if she be not able to bring a lamb then she shall bring two turtledoves or two
young pigeons, one for the burnt offering and the other for a sin offering; and
the priest shall make an atonement for her and she shall be clean.
Obviously,
this law continued to be observed by the Jews down to Jesus’ day; for when
Jesus was born he was circumcised on the eight day, and Mary fulfilled her
thirty three days of purification and went to the temple on the fortieth day
and presented there two turtledoves. More
