So God has said what should be done to atone individual sin,
priestly sin, and sin of the whole congregation; but God now stipulates for sin
of ignorance committed by a ruler, as a separate category, since a ruler by
definition may be excluded from any of the three groups just mentioned.
So now if a ruler sins through
ignorance against any of the commandments of God and such sin comes to
knowledge, he shall bring for his offering a male kid of the goat, without
blemish. He shall lay his hand upon the head of the goat and kill it in the
same place as that in which the burnt offering is killed, and offer it as a sin
offering.
And the
priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and sprinkle
it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and pour out the blood at the
foot of the altar of burnt offering. And he the priest shall burn all the fat
upon the altar as the fat of the sacrifice of the peace offering; and the
priest shall make an atonement for the ruler concerning his sin and it shall be
forgiven him.
Even so, to make sure that none be
excluded who may not deem himself a member of the congregation, maybe someone
who had been expelled or whose membership was suspended or deemed an outcast of
the tribe of Israel, the Lord made provision for him also so that he could
bring to the congregation a female lamb, and offer it as for a sin
offering. He shall lay his hands upon
it, thereby identifying himself with his sin and having killed it, the priest
shall sprinkle the blood, and burn the fat as per any other sin offering and
likewise make an atonement for him and his sin also shall be forgiven him.
So we see
that none of the children of Israel was excluded from the embrace of the blood
atonement my making an offering for his sin; and by parity of reasoning, we see
also that no one is excluded from coming to Christ and be covered by His shed
blood shed once and for all on the cross of Calvary.
