Continuing with the trespass
offering, we have seen the requirement for a female lamb or kid failing which,
two turtledoves or two young pigeons.
Now these were to be brought to the priest who was directed how to deal
with them as with every other offering.
First the priest would offer what
was for the sin offering first , that is to say one of the two that were
offered, when the priest shall wring its neck and without otherwise cutting it,
sprinkle its blood upon the altar and the bottom of the altar for a sin
offering. Then that having been done, he offers the second for a burnt offering
according to the custom for burnt offerings and make an atonement for the sin
of the sinner.
But what was to happen if the
sinner could not get a lamb or a kid or turtledoves or pigeons? Well the Lord made a way for such a one also.
His offering was to be a tenth part of an ephah of fine flour; but with no oil
or frankincense added. Here again we
notice the difference between a love offering and a sin offering; The
burnt love offerings were scented with oil and frankincense for a sweet savor
unto the Lord; but not so the sin offering, not even when the sin was due to inadvertence
or ignorance. The Lord has no pleasure
in the ordor of sin.
So then the priest would take a
handful of the flour and burn it sans oil or frankincense according as the
offering was made unto the Lord by fire, for a sin offering.
So whatever the sin offering the
priest shall make an atonement for the sinner and the remnant in every case was
the priests for a meal offering. More
