Now it came to pass after Nadab and
Abihu, the sons of Aaron saw the fire from God, they decided to make fire which
the Lord had not order them to make. Up to that point there was no direction
given them regarding the use of a censer; so what they did both of them took
their censer, put fire and incense in them and offered “ strange fire,” before
the Lord, which they had not been commanded to do.
As a consequence the Lord sent out
a fire and consumed them both and they perished.
Moses, therefore, said to Aaron,
“This is but an example of what the Lord meant when He said, I will be
sanctified in them that come near me, and before all the people I will be
glorified.” And having heard this Aaron made no reply.
And Moses called Mishael, and
Elzaphan the sons of Uzziel, the uncle of Aaron and said unto them, “Come near,
carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.
So they went near and carried them
still in their coats out of the camp as Moses told them to.
We note that the fire upon the
altar was fire ordered by God which the priests were to keep constantly alive. “And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed
upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat which was upon the altar.”
To repeat, God had not commanded
for any other fire to be upon the altar nor for fire to be put in censer and
frankincense therein to make fire in God’s holy place. So both Nadab and Abihu
committed the sin of polluting God’s worship by interposing their own will and
acting without seeking God’s will in the matter. More
