BRAGADAYJAH 1056
Ahaziah fell ill.
After the death of Ahab, Moab
rebelled against Israel. And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in an upper
chamber in Samaria and he was ill. And he sent his messengers to Baalzebub the
god of Ekron, to ask him whether he should recover or not. But the angel of the
Lord spoke to Elijah and told him to go and meet the messengers and ask them if
it was because there is not a God in Israel why they were sent to enquire of
Baalzebub the god of Ekron? “Now this is
what the Lord says to Ahaziah. Thou shalt not come down from the bed on which
you are lying and you shall surely die.” And Elijah went and told the
messengers what the Lord had said, and then he departed. And the messengers
returned to the king; and he asked them why they were turned back; and they
told him a man came to meet them and told them to go back to the king and tell
him “Thus saith the Lord, is it because there is no king in Israel why he sent
you to speak to Baalzebub the god of Ekron?
Therefore thou shall not come down from thy bed, but thou shall surely
die.” And the king asked his messengers
to describe the man; and they said he was a hairy man and girded around his
loins with a leather girdle. And the
king said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”
