BRAGADAYJAH 1045
Baal did not hear his prophets
So the prophets of Baal could not back down from Elijah’s challenge which he
made to them in the presence of their king and all the people; so they took
hold of their bullock and killed and dressed it and put it on the wood as
Elijah had charged them. Then they started
to call on their god. And they called upon Baal from morning until noon saying,
“O Baal hear us,” they pleaded; but there was no reply. And they leapt upon the
altar which they had built. And at noon Elijah mocked them and said, “Cry aloud
for he is a god and he may be talking, or maybe he is in pursuit, or on a
journey somewhere; or maybe he is fast asleep and must be awakened.” And they
cried louder and cut themselves with knives and lancets as was their custom, until
their blood gushed out. And after midday had past and they prophesied until the
time of the evening sacrifice that there was neither voice nor any to answer or
to regard them. For their god Baal was silent.
