Elijah anoints Elisha
And the Lord said to Elijah, “Go return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus; and when you get there, anoint Hazael to be king of Syria; and Jehu the son of Nimshi shall thou anoint to be king over Israel; and Elijah the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shall thou appoint to be prophet in thy stead. And it shall come to pass that he that escapes the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay; and him that escape from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay. Nevertheless, I have left me seven thousand in Israel who have not bowed the knees to Baal and who have not kissed him.” So Elijah departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat who was plowing with twelve yokes of oxen before him; and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle on him. And Elisha left his oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother and then I will follow you.” And Elijah told him to go because he had done nothing to detain him. And Elisha turned away from Elijah and took a yoke of oxen and slew them and boiled their flesh and gave it to the people and they ate; and then Elisha arose and went after Elijah and ministered to him.
