BRAGADAYJAH 1045
Ahab defeats Benhadad in battle
Ahab defeats Benhadad in battle
Then the two armies pitched
their tents opposite to each other and remained so for seven days. And on the
seventh day the battle was joined and the children of Israel slew one hundred
thousand foot soldiers in one day. But the rest of the Syrians fled to Aphek
into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty seven thousands of them. And
Benhadad fled and hid himself in an inner chamber. And his servants told him
that they had heard that the kings of the Israelites were merciful men.
Therefore they urged the king that they should put sackcloth on their loins,
and ropes on their heads, and go out and humble themselves before the king of
Israel, for perhaps he would spare their lives. So they girded sackcloth on
their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and went before the king of Israel
and said, “Thy servant Benhadad says I pray thee let me live.” And Ahab asked
if he was yet alive as he is his brother. And they replied and said yes. And Ahab invited him to go up and sit beside
him in his carriage; and Benhadad went and sat with Ahab in his carriage.
