BRAGADAYJAH
1048
Elijah’s
life threatened by Jezebel.
Now
Ahab told his wife Jezebel all that Elijah had done, how he had slain all the
prophets of Baal with the sword. And Jezebel sent an angry message to Elijah
saying, “So let the gods do to me and more if I make not thy life as the life
of one of them by this time tomorrow.” So when Elijah heard that, he rose and
fled for his life; and he came to Beersheba of Judah and left his servant
there. But he himself went on for a day’s journey, and entered into the
wilderness and sat down under a Jupiter tree. And he prayed to the Lord and
asked him to take away his life since he had become no better than his fathers.
And when he had closed his eyes and fell asleep, an angel touched him and told
him to arise and eat. And when he had opened his eyes he saw a cake baked over
coals and a cruse of water at his head. And he ate and drank and went back to
sleep. And the angel of the Lord came to him a second time and touched him a
second time and said arise and eat because the journey ahead is long and hard.
And Elijah rose and ate and drank and rose and walked on for forty days and
forty nights until he reached mount Horeb the mount of God. And there he
entered a cave and lodged there.
