And so the men of Kirjathjearim came
down and took the ark away from Bethshemesh and carried it to their city in
Kirjathjearim, and placed it in the house of Abinadab and sanctified Eleazar
his son to keep the ark of the Lord. And
it came to pass that while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, it remained there
some twenty years during which time all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.
And Samuel spoke unto all the house of Israel and told them if they return unto
the Lord with all their hearts, and put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth
from among them, and turn their hearts unto the Lord and serve Him only, then
He would deliver them out of the hand of the Philistines. Then the children of
Israel did as Samuel told them and put away Baalim and Ashtaroth and served the
Lord only. And Samuel told them to assemble themselves at Mizpeh and that he
would pray unto the Lord for them there.
