Now seeing the Ark of the Lord in the
hands of the Bethshemites, the Philistines returned unto their city in Ekron
the same day. These are the golden emerods which the five lords of the
Philistines offered for a trespass offering unto the Lord. For Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Askelon one,
for Gath one, and for Ekron one. And the golden mice according to all the
cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities and
of country villages even unto the great stone of Abel whereon they set down the
ark of the Lord which stone remained thereafter in the field of Joshua the
Bethshemite. And the Lord was angry with the men of Bethshemesh because of the
way they violated the Ark and its offering, and he slaughtered them with a mighty
slaughter. So the men of Bethshemesh sent messengers to the inhabitants of
Kirjathjearim telling them that the Philistines had brought the ark to them and
asking them to come down and get it.
