Having determined that the sickness
among them was caused by the presence among them of the Ark of God, the people
of Ashdod gathered together all of the Lords of the Philistines and sought their
advice with regard to the ark of God. And they advised that it be taken away
from Ashdod and be taken to Gath; and so they carried it to the city of Gath.
But it came to pass that after the ark was taken into the city, the hand of the
Lord was stretched out against that city and smote the men small and great with
sores on their private parts. So the people of Gath sent the ark of God to
Ekron; but as the ark was about to be carried into the city, the people cried
out in protest saying, “They are bringing the ark of God of the children of
Israel to slay us and our people!” So they sent and gathered together all the
Lords of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of God, and let it go to
its own place, that it slays us not and our people.” For those who did not die
from the presence of the ark in the city, were smitten with the sores sickness.
