And the Philistines took the ark of God
from Ebenezer to Ashdod, and put it into the house of their god Dagon. And when the people of Ashdod rose early on
the following morning and looked to their god, it was fallen flat on its face,
and lay on the ground before the ark of the Lord, so they took up Dagon and set
it in its place again. And when they rose early on the following morning, Dagon
was again fallen to the ground flat on its face; but this time its head and
arms were severed, only a stump remaining. Therefore neither the priests of
Dagon, nor any other came into Dagon’s house, or unto its threshold ever since. And the hand
of the Lord was heavy upon the people of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and
smote them with emerods, (tumors, piles), from within Ashdod and also along its
coast. And when the men of Ashdod saw what was happening, they decided that the
ark of God should not remain with them in their city, because it caused them
and their god sore trouble.
