BRAGADAYJAH 966
Amasa slain by Joab.
It happened that Amasa did not complete the task assigned by king
David and report in the three days stipulated; so David told Abishai that Sheba
would probably be more troublesome to him than was Absalom, and ordered him to
take men and pursue after Sheba before he is able to take fenced cities and
escape. And so there went out with him, Joab’s men and the Cherethites, and the
Pelethites, and all the mighty men; and they went out of Jerusalem to pursue
after Sheba the son of Bichri. And when
they arrived at the great stone which is at Gibeon, Amasa went before them. And Joab’s wore a garment under which he had a
sword on his hip and as he was going his sword fell out And Joab greeted Amasa
asking him how he was, taking him by the beard as though he was about to give
him a brotherly greeting and in doing so, Amasa took no thought about the sword
that Joab was in Joab’s hand; and Joab struck Amasa under the fifth rib and
slew him. with the sword, causing his bowels to spill out unto the ground and
he died. So Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba. And one of Joab’s
men stood close to him and told the men that those who were for Joab and for
David let them follow Joab. In the meantime, Amasa’s body remained in the
highway covered with blood; and when the man who spoke out for Joab saw that
the people when they came to Amasa’s body stood still, he removed the body out
of the highway, and covered it with a cloth. And after he had done so the
people passed on and followed after Joab.
