BRAGADAYJAH 964
David and Barzillai
David responded to Mephibosheth and told him there was no longer any
need for him to plead his cause with him, because he had already forgave him,
and had already told him he could divide his father’s land with Ziba, and that
was the end of the matter as far as he David was concerned. True Mephibosheth
had forsaken him in the time of Absalom; but that was in the past as far as
David was concerned. Yet Mephibosheth responded and told the king that he was
just glad to have him back in peace; but other than that Ziba could have all the
land as he was not interested in it. Then Barzillai the Gileadite came down to
meet David and to accompany him across the river Jordan It happened at the time that Barzillai was a
man of around fourscore years, and also a man of means, because he had gave
sustenance to David when he was marooned at Mahanaim. And David invited him to
accompany him all the way to his house at Jerusalem; but Barzillai said he was
too old to go live with David, and would only get in his way; so he asked
excuse of the king and told him he would let him have his servant Chimham go
with him, and that he was his to do as he pleased. David accepted the offer promising Barzillai
to treat his servant well, and also telling Barzillai that if ever he needed
anything of the king all he had to do was to ask. After that the two men embraced kissed and
parted, David and his servants crossing over Jordan and going on to Jerusalem
while Barzillai went back to his own home.
