Death of Absalom
Having seen the accident suffered by Absalom, one of Joab’s company went and told Joab and Joab asked him why he did not kill Absalom rather than just leaving him hanging there, and told the man that he would have given him ten shekels of silver and a trophy beside, should he have killed Absalom. But the man replied and said that he would not have done it for a thousand shekels, because he would not put forth his hand against the king’s son; for the king had ordered in his hearing as well as that of all his people, that they should not touch the young man Absalom. To do otherwise the man explained would have been false to himself and to the king; and in anywise no matter can be hidden from the ears of the king. And he Joab himself would have had cause against him. Replying, Joab told the man that he was not going to waste further time talking to him; so he went to where Absalom was still hanging, and yet very much alive and thrust him through the heart. And ten of Joab’s armor-bearers also surrounded Absalom and killed him. And Joab blew the trumpet and the people returned from pursuing after Absalom; for Joab called them back. And they took the body of Absalom and cast it into a great pit in the wood and piled a large pile of stones upon it; and they all fled away from the place.. Now Absalom had no children and during his lifetime, he had erected a pillar as a memorial to himself in the king’s dale for he had said that since he had no son to perpetuate his memory, the place which he erected and called Absalom’s place remained as his only memorial.
