Hearing
the Lord’s words of grief towards Saul, and having spent a sleepless night,
Samuel rose early in the morning, and went looking for Saul Samuel, and was
told that Saul went to Carmel, and having sojourned there briefly had moved on
to Gilgal. And so Samuel went there and
confronted Saul. But before Samuel could say a word, Saul seized the
opportunity to defend himself. “Bless be
thou of the Lord, Saul said to Samuel. “I have performed the commandment of the
Lord.” And so Samuel asked him why then he was hearing the bleating of sheep
and the lowing of the oxen in his ears? Saul’s
all too quick reply was that the people had brought them from the
Amalekites. “They spared the best of the
sheep and of the oxen for a sacrifice unto the Lord; but the rest we have
utterly destroyed. Then Samuel told Saul to give him a moment and allow him to
hear what the Lord’s response to him will be. We note that Saul’s response when it related
to the wrongdoing was, ‘the people;’ ”The people took the spoils;” but as to
that which complied with God’s command, it was ‘we.’ “The rest we have utterly destroyed.”
