BRAGADAYJAH
844
And
Samuel rose up from Gilgal and went to Gibeah of Benjamin. And at that time
Saul numbered the men about him, and the number of them was six hundred men.
And Saul and his son Jonathon and the people that were with them remained in
Gibeah of Benjamin; but the Philistines encamped at Michmash. And the
Philistines sent out three companies from the main camp. One company turned towards Ophrah, another
turned and went towards Bethhoron, and the third company went the way of the
border of the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness. It happened at that time
that there was no smith throughout all the land of Israel; and the Philistines
would not allow any of their smiths to go and dwell in the land of Israel, lest
the Israelites would learn how to make swords and spears of steel. But Israelis
were allowed to go down into Philistines to sharpen their axes and the mattocks
and other tools. So that when the day of battle arrived, there was present with
Saul, only six hundred men and his son Jonathon; and none of them had spear nor
sword. In the meantime the vast Philistines army amassed against them at
Michmash.
