The
Ammorites Move against Saul
Soon
after Saul was anointed king, Nahash the Ammonite came and encamp against
Jabesh-Gilead. And the men of Jabesh
invited Nahash to make a covenant with them and promised to serve him. And Nahash
responded and told them that the only covenant he would make with them would be
to pluck out their eyes and dangle them as a reproach to all Israel. And the
elders of Jabesh asked Nahash to give them seven days to consider the matter;
and if at the end of seven days during which time they would send messengers to
all the coasts of Israel; and if there be no one to save them they would join
forces with him. So the messengers went out and delivered the message in the
ears of the people of Israel; and when the people heard it they wept. Now King Saul was not present at the time;
but when he returned from the herd in the field he heard the weeping, and asked
what it was all about; and they told him the tidings brought to them by the men
of Jabesh. And the Spirit of God came upon Saul and his anger was kindled
greatly.
