Now
Moses addressed the children of Israel the day they were about to cross over
the Jordan as he sadly reflected on the past.
“Hear O Israel, you are to pass over the Jordan this day, to go into
possess nations that are greater and mightier than you are, with cities
fortified up to heaven. There are people great and tall, the children of the
Anakim, whom you are aware of, and who you have heard it said, “Who can stand
before the children of Anak?” Know,
therefore, this day, that the Lord your God is the one who goes over before
you; as a consuming fire He shall destroy them and cause them to fall before
your face, so that you will destroy them and drive them out quickly as the Lord
has said unto you.”
“Do
not tell yourself after the Lord has cast them out, that it was because of your
righteousness that the Lord has brought you in to possess the land; but because
of the wickedness of those nations. the Lord has cast them out. It is not for your
righteousness or because of the uprightness of your heart that you get to
possess the land; but for the wickedness of those nations, he has driven them
out before you, and also to perform the promises which He made to your fathers,
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Understand,
therefore, that the Lord already knows you are a stiff-necked people even
though He has given you this land to possess.
