continues to address the new Nation
“Take
heed to yourselves and keep your souls diligently lest you forget the things
you which your eyes have seen and lest they depart from thy heart all the days
of thy life; but teach them to thy sons and thy son’s sons. Never forget the day you stood before the
Lord your God in Horeb when the Lord said to me, “Gather me the people together
and I will make them hear my words that they may learn to fear me all the days
of their life upon the earth, and that they may teach their children. Then you
came near and stood under the mountain and the mountain burned with fire; it burned
unto the midst of heaven with darkness, clouds and thick darkness. And the Lord spoke unto you out of the midst
of the fire. You heard the voice of his words but saw no likeness. You only heard a voice; and he declared unto
you his covenant which he commanded you to perform, namely the Ten Commandments
and he wrote them on two tables of stone.
And the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you his statutes and his
commandments that you may do them in the land which you are about to go over
and possess. “
