Now
just to understand the magnitude of the conquest and the greatness of the
battle, that was fought and won, let us look at the size of the booty.
There
were six hundred and seventy five thousand sheep, seventy two thousand oxen,
sixty one thousand asses, thirty two thousand persons comprising the women who
were chaste and young girls. This beside the gold and silver and precious
metals comprised the booty seized, not by any means a small amount.
Thereafter,
the captains who were over the thousands of the host and the captains of hundreds,
came to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and told them that they had counted all
the men over which they had charge and that not one man had been lost.
Therefore they said, they brought an oblation to the Lord as every man has
gotten of jewels of gold, chains, bracelets, rings and earrings, and necklaces
to make an atonement for their souls before the Lord. And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the
jewelry and they offered it up unto the Lord, all of which came to sixteen
thousand seven hundred shekels as a memorial for the children of Israel.
