And
the Lord spoke unto Moses and told him that Phinehas the son of Eleazar the son
of Aaron the priest, had turned his wrath away from the children of Israel,
because of his zeal in dealing with the man of Israel and the Medianitish woman
for the Lord’s sake, that his anger against Israel had been abated and he would
not consume them in his wrath.
Therefore,
said the Lord, I give unto him my covenant of peace. And he shall have it and his seed after him,
even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood because he was zealous for his
God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
It
happened that the name of the Israelite man who had sinned with the Medianitish
woman and was slain by Phinehas was Zimri the son of Salu a prince of a chief
house of the Simeonites; and the name of the Medianitish woman was Cozbi the
daughter of Zur who was head over a people and a chief house in Median.
So
the Lord told Moses, to vex the Medianites and smite them; for they vex you
with their wiles wherein they have beguiled Israel in the matter of Peor, and
in the matter of Cozbi the daughter of the prince of Median their sister who
was slain by Phinehas in the matter of the plagues
