BRAGADAYJAH 1150
Attempts To Frustrate the Works
Now in the course of time the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard
that the children of the captivity had started to re-build the temple of the
Lord God of Israel; and they came to Zerubbabel, and the chief of the fathers
and told them they would like to build with them; for they said, they sought
the Lord in the same way they did, and explained that they had been doing so
since the days of their own captivity. But Zerubbabel and the chiefs of the
fathers of Israel told them that they by themselves would build the house of
their God according to the decree of Cyrus king of Persia. So they left and tried
to persuade the people of the land to withdraw their support and their
contributions toward the building work. And they hired counsellors in order to
frustrate the will of the people even from that time onwards all during the rest
of the reign of Cyrus even to the time when Darius succeeded him as king of
Persia.
