BRAGADAYJAH 1149
Mingled Joy and Weeping
In the second year after the people had come to the house of God in
Jerusalem, in the second month, Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the
son of Jozadak together with the remnant of the brethren and the priests and
Levites and the others out of the captivity appointed the Levites that were
twenty years old and upwards to oversee work on the house of the Lord. Then Jeshua
with his sons and brethren and Kadmiel with his sons the sons of Judah stood
together to set forward the workmen for the house of the Lord. Together with
Henadad and his sons and their brethren the Levites And when they had laid the
foundation of the temple of the Lord, they set the priests with their apparel
with trumpets and the Levites the sons of Asaph with their cymbals to praise
the Lord after the ordinance of David King of Israel. And they sang, “Praise
and thanksgiving unto the Lord because He is good, and his mercy endureth
forever.” And all the people shouted with a great shout of joy because the
foundation was laid. But many of the older men, the Levites and priests who had
seen with their eyes the first foundation that was laid wept and shouted for
joy. And the shouts of weeping and shouts of joy were mingled together, so that
it was difficult to distinguish between the shouts of weeping and the shouts of
sheer joy; but the noise could be heard a long way off.
