Cyrus King of Persia
Some fifty years after the final deportation of Judah it happened that
Cyrus king of Persia was moved during the first year of his reign, by the
unseen power of the Spirit of God, to make a proclamation throughout all the
kingdom and reduced it into writing to the effect: “Thus sayeth Cyrus king of
Persia, the Lord God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth. And
He hath charged me to build Him a house in Jerusalem which is in Judah. Who is
there among you of all His people? His God be with him. Therefore let him go up
to Jerusalem which is in Judah and build the house of the Lord God of Israel;
for He is the God. And whosoever remains in any place, where he dwells, let the
men of that place help him with silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts
together with the free-will offering, to build the house of the Lord there in
