BRAGADAYJAH 1178
Opposition By Ridicule.
So on and on Nehemiah gave account of all those who took part in the
building and restoration of the ruined walls of Jerusalem. The two great points
he made were to name each group that took part and also the fact that each
group took responsibility for and completed the work to be done, which
highlights the point that doing the Lord’s work does not always call for
duplicity, but continuity in community, that is to say, all working together to
do what each has the capacity and the call to do. But as the work continued to
progress there were the opposition. So that when Sanballat heard that the wall
was being built he was angry and took great indignation and mocked the Jews.
And he spoke out in the presence of the builders and of the army of Samaria and
said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Are they fortifying themselves? Will
they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they recover the stones out of
the pile of rubbish that we burned?” And Tobiah, Sanballat’s companion sneered,
“Even that which they put up, if a fox go up it, it will break it down.”
