BRAGADAYJAH 1156
Letter to King Darius (continues)
The letter to king Darius further continued: They [the builders] when
we asked them by whose authority they continued the work in spite of the
prohibitive injunction, they replied and said. “We are the servants of the God
of heaven and earth, and we build the house that was built many years ago,
which a great king of Israel built and set up. But because our fathers had
provoked the God of heaven unto wrath He gave them into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon the Chaldean who destroyed this house and
carried the people into Babylon. But in the first year of Cyrus King of Babylon
the same King Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God. King Cyrus was
moved by God to allow His house to be built because Ezra his servant had taken
the courage to petition the king and so the king, after visiting Jerusalem,
gave command for the house to be built. In this account there is a little bit
of a question did the builders tell their adversaries that Cyrus was king of
Babylon or did they make it up to undermine Cyrus’ authority to make decisions
for Persia. Cyrus overthrew the Babylonian empire for Persia. So when they
reported to Darius they were told the order given by Cyrus was as king of
Babylon, that account raises a question either of misstatement of facts. or
error of transmission.
